Maria Toumazous Arbeit ist überwiegend skulptural, doch das Erkunden anderer Disziplinen und Perspektiven als künstlerische Praxis steht im Mittelpunkt. Sie interessiert sich für den Moment, in dem gefundene Formen sich für alternative Nutzungskonzepte öffnen und durch kreative Prozesse, die von Ort und Biografie beeinflusst sind, Objekte, Materialien und Situationen gestalten. Literarische Formen – wie der Realismus und seine Aufmerksamkeit für das Alltägliche – dienen als Methodik zur Konstruktion von Erzählungen innerhalb und zwischen den Werken.
Geschichtliche und kulturelle Aspekte offenbaren sich auch in ihrer materiellen Ausführung und entwirren Spannungen in der Chronologie und zirkuläre Referenzen, die häufig auf verschiedene Design-Epochen zurückgreifen. Ihre prozessorientierte Praxis verknüpft zarte Erzählungen mit Industrie, Mechanik und improvisierten Erfindungen und verwendet subjektive Gesten, um einen Widerstand gegen dominante ökonomische Strukturen zu manifestieren.
An anderer Stelle, indem sie die Rolle der Künstlerin als Schöpferin, Designerin oder Dokumentarin verschiebt, hat Toumazou kollektive Projekte ins Leben gerufen, die als unabhängige Produktionsweisen bestehen: Neoterismoi Toumazou (ein Projektraum und Kunstkollektiv mit einem Programm, das Poesie, Performance, Musik, Mode und Objektkunst zusammenbrachte), Maria Editions (ein unabhängiges Verlagshaus mit Sitz in Nikosia und New York) und Metafora (ein zypriotischer Möbelhändler mit Schwerpunkt auf postmodernem Design).
